They're used by hula dancers and chanters by holding them on the necks and tap the bottom or tapping them on the floor.

Most of the ipu and ipu heke 'ole I make are functional hula implements, they're coated to give good resonance.

# A50 Natural gourd Monstera leaves on a black carved- out back ground. A lot of work but I'm happy with how it turned out. Definitely one of my favorites.

Leaf Fern Ipu Heke Ipu Heke, a double-gourd drum. It takes a lot of work to make these double hula drums. It takes a lot of sanding and fitting and sanding and fitting the two gourds. # 186 Bird of Paradise Ipu The background circle is carved out instead of cut out to make it a real working ipu. The inside is also coated to make good sound. I made this for the kids' school fun rasing silent auction. Wish me luck! :0)	Decorative Drum # 142. Not very often that I find big, tall gourds like this. I did clean sand it and color the inside black after I took the picture :0) I had waited for the right gourd to make this hanging Heliconia design. I love this flower so much. Finally I got just the gourd! It's a decorative drum and looks charming to me. Ihope you like it, too. 22" around the top, 35" bottom and 13.5" tall.
